The new way to get out of working on Thanksgiving

Nov 17, 2014, 5:28 PM

This is the story that YOU wanted to hear us talk about! It received 45 percent of the vote in our Radioactive poll!

Have you ever lined up outside a store the day after Thanksgiving to get the best deals? What about making a family trip to the mall after Thanksgiving dinner?

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales all the rage nowadays, it seems like many Americans are scarfing down their turkey and stuffing in order to hit the shops. And now, many employees are being forced to cut their Thanksgiving short in order to work at these peak shopping times.

Donna Fisher of Pennsylvania works at Kmart every Thanksgiving, but she said the time away from her family have increased over the years, as Kmart has steadily increased the hours stores are open on Thanksgiving.

Her daughter Jillian Fisher told WHAS 11 that she has watched her mother leave the family every Thanksgiving night for many years, and she is finally fed up with it.

Jillian Fisher launched a Change.org petition urging the store to close early, and many employees required to work the holiday are following suit. Donna Fisher is proud of her daughter but has been a loyal Kmart employee for 21 years and doesn’t want to cause trouble.

“I don’t have a problem working, I have a problem with having to be at their beck and call 24/7,” Donna Fisher, 58, said. “I’m not a first responder out there saving lives, I’m selling clothing. I really don’t think we need to be shopping for napkins on Thanksgiving.”

Kmart opens at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving and will stay open for 42 hours.
