Although most Americans may see the conflicts in Ukraine and the one with ISIS to be separate events, they are linked on the world stage.
That link may even involve a partnership with Russia on one front while maintaining a standoff on the other.
According to CNN, the U.S. and Russia could find themselves on the same team after Ukraine agreed to make several rebellious cities autonomous for three years.
We know, it’s complicated. Stick with us.
Alexander Nekrassov, a former Russian adviser, said the Ukrainian proposal could be viewed as a sort of olive branch from President Barack Obama to President Vladimir Putin.
The view in Moscow is that the Obama Administration is telling the Kremlin that it needs help in dealing with ISIS. But as it can’t just say it publicly, it is using Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to do the honors.
Nekrassov said the Kremlin may not approve of Obama’s plan, as Russia backs President Bashar al-Assad in Syria while the U.S. supports rebel forces, but it may prove mutually beneficial to partner and destroy ISIS.
The partnership would depend on both the U.S. and Russia conceding ground or delaying goals, but given the growing threat of ISIS extremism, it could pan out.
