Should you hope your next flight is delayed?

This is the story that YOU wanted to hear us talk about! It received 48 percent of the vote in our Radioactive poll!

If your next flight is delayed, it’s possible that not every passenger will be upset. In fact, a some might have a huge smile and a nice check waiting for them.

According to NBC News, AirCare, a new travel insurance police offered by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, offers travelers money for delayed flights, long tarmac waits and even lost baggage.

“I purchased the plan for my wife and myself, and our flight from New York to Phoenix on June 3 was tarmac-delayed due to an inbound thunderstorm,” said Stuart Kritz of Melville, New York. “After arriving in Phoenix five hours late, I learned AirCare was funding my PayPal account $1,000 for each of us and by 2 p.m. the next day, the account had been funded.”

The coverage is pretty affordable as well — policies cost just $25 per domestic trip. Those insured can get $50 for a two-hour delay, $500 for a missed connection and $1,000 for a tarmac delay over two hours. If the airline misplaces a bag, travelers can receive $500 for a delay more than 12 hours or $1,000 for lost or stolen bags. The funds are paid via PayPal and the company tracks flights to disburse funds quickly.

“There are 660 million air travel segments a year that could have a problem,” said John Noel, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection president. “That’s our market potential.”

Noel said the coverage will be expanded in both items covered and international flights soon.
