A student protest against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration policies outside of Trevor Browne High School lasted more than three hours and resulted in six arrests -- including two juveniles.

All six admitted they were illegal immigrants and face an Immigration and Customs Enforcement court appearance or possible deportment.

"It's up to ICE," said Phoenix officer James Holmes. "We don't know what's going to happen with them next, or how soon it's going to happen."

But for starters anyone in the group over the age of 18 was processed at the Fourth Avenue Jail. Those younger then 18 were sent to the juvenile detention center, said Holmes.

Many of the protesters said they didn't not fear jail time.

"We worry every day and it's time for us to use that same fear we have for the love of our families and say, 'We're not going to be afraid anymore,'" one protester told KNPX- TV.

Arpaio, in a statement released Wednesday, condemned the protestors and said he would press on with his style of enforcing immigration laws.

"If these students/demonstrators have a concern over the immigration laws they should bring those concerns to Congress, State Legislators, or the White House and not use this Sheriff as their poster boy," Arpaio said in the statement.

MCSO confirmed that four of the people arrested were in the country illegally. Their mugshots are below.

The rally forced closure of 75th Avenue from Thomas Road to Campbell Avenue.

Chants of "Undocumented!, Unafraid!" could be heard from the crowd of more than 100, mostly students with a few adults.

The protesters directed a few of their chants at the sheriff.

"We're here to stay -- Joe Arpaio is not going to scare us anymore," said Daniela Cruz, one of those arrested.

Other chants included: "Arpaio we're here, we're undocumented and we have no fear;" "Up, up with education; down, down with deportation;" "Arpaio we're here. Our community has no fear;" and "No justice, no peace. No racist police."

    I have never understood why a group of individuals would block traffic (illegal), ignore cops (illegal) state that they are here illegally, trying to make the point that they deserve to be allowed to remain in the US and be treated as law abiding citizens - when they are in fact breaking the law.

    If I were to advise these people on how they can best make a positive impact on their cause - take these same students, arm them with rakes, trash bags and gloves, invite the media and clean up a park or a couple of miles of a phoenix street and show us what a vital part of the community they are... rather than block a street in the middle of rush hour traffic.

    you are comparing apples to oranges...two very different situations. Hispanics do not have separate drinking fountains, they are not made to ride in the back of the bus, they are not persecuted or prosecuted if they marry outside of their race. Illegals, mostly hispanic, want Americans to overlook the fact that they and/or their parents SNUCK into this country, in the "dark of night" they want to be rewarded for the illegal behavior.

    if you are trying to clear your name,spend your money, take the time and become a legal citizen of this country instead of living off the legal taxpayers back.     Illigal immigrant vs. Black persecution. These are two very seperate situations. I am very proud of the way Blacks stood up for themselves during the civil rights movement. They had been (and in some cases still are) persecuted for no reason other than people don't like their skin color. The illegal immigrant situation, however, is not a civil rights issue. It is a matter of immigration. Blacks were defending their rights as Americans. Illegal Immigrants are claiming those same rights when in reality they do not have those rights.

    by many Americans during his lawbreaking civil rights struggle. I heard the exact same odium expressed about him from Arizonans during the struggles to get the MLK holiday here in our state. BTW, my family and I participated in every MLK day march that was held prior to enactment.

    There is a difference between legal immigrants and illegal aliens. The only two face people are those calling illegal aliens/ immigrants. At one time YOU were undocumented, how did you become a legal United States citizen? Was there a process that you had to complete, similar to my Grandparents that got off the boat in 1918?     legal citizens of this state ( and most other states) are required to show identification when stopped by law enforcement, we are required to show id when we vote, when we go to get our social security number we have to show a valid birth certificate...you're saying that those who came here illegally should be exempt?

The holiday was put to a vote of the Arizonans in 1990, but was rejected by voters. It wasn't until the NFL pulled the Super Bowl from Tempe and the economic fallout, that Arizona's business leaders saw the sense in supporting the holiday. It was money that motivated support for the holiday, not a commitment to civil rights. Even so, we have the holiday.
