Aussie man looking to run across the world passes through Glendale

Tom Dennis. (Taylor Summers/KTAR)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Training for a marathon takes months of preparation and training. Now imagine running 700 marathons in a 700 day span.

That's what Tom Dennis of Sydney, Australia is doing.

Since the start of the year, Dennis has been running about 31 miles a day at a steady pace. Thursday, his journey took him through Arizona.

"I run really slow. I couldn't do this fast," Dennis said. "I've run marathons and half-marathons and I feel much worse at the end of any of those than I do after a 100 days of this."

And Dennis wouldn't want to run fast even if he had the option to. He's enjoying his trip too much.

"I've spent a lot of time alone in the countryside, where particularly in Arizona there are long stretches of time where you don't see anyone," Dennis said. "But you get to see things at a slower pace than you would in a car. You also get a chance to smell it and even touch it as well."

Dennis is running a total of 18,000 miles and hopes to be done by next October. He's also collecting donations on behalf of an international charity called Oxfam, which aims to help African countries sustain themselves.
