PHOENIX -- Popular spring break destinations are of big concern for the U.S State Department, but one rock-n- roll living legend says at least one of those places should not be on the list.

Earlier this month the State Department issued this warning for people thinking about visiting the coastal town of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point:

"Exercise caution when visiting the coastal town of Puerto Peņasco. Sonora is a key region in the international drug and human trafficking trades, and can be extremely dangerous for travelers. The region west of Nogales, east of Sonoyta, and from Caborca north, including the towns of Saric, Tubutama and Altar, and the eastern edge of Sonora bordering Chihuahua, are known centers of illegal activity. U.S. citizens visiting Puerto Peņasco are urged to use the Lukeville, Arizona/Sonoyta, Sonora border crossing, in order to limit driving through Mexico, and to limit travel to main roads during daylight hours."

Singer-songwriter Steve McCarty (of Steve Miller fame) can appreciate the value in these types of warnings or alerts but says he's been visiting Rocky Point for several years and has never had a problem.

"The media would have people believe that all of Mexico is dangerous and that's just not true. I actually feel much safer in Rocky Point than I do in just about any other major American City," said McCarty.

In fact, for the second year in a row, he's brought together a group of platinum rock stars for the 2nd Annual Penasco Palooza Concert happening March 17th.

Joining McCarty at the event will be Curly Smith of Boston fame, and an all Rock Star Band featuring Jimmy Crespo of Aerosmith, Gary Moon of Night Ranger, Leon Bisquera, who played for Anita Baker, David Lewark who played for Sammy Hagar and Paul Mcdermand of the Moody Blues.

"Now I know Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana and some other cities are very, very dangerous, and I certaintly wouldn't go there, but Rocky Point is one of the safest destinations," McCarty said.

not as safe as it used to be
Rocky Point isn't the sleepy town it used to be. They have found headless bodies of men & women, there was at least one running gunbattle through town, an AK47 murder in the seaport, & the police chief was gunned down. None of this made the local news and events like this are now accepted as commonplace. Mexican reporters won't write stories about the violence because the Cartels are killing those who do. Mexico needs to get their act together before we support them with our dollars.

    love Rocky Point
Rocky Point is a great place. I've been going down for over 18 years with zero problem. When first timers come down they're always pleasantly surprised to find beautiful beaches, great food, wonderful people in less than a 4 hour drive from Phoenix! Thanks KTAR for printing the truth versus the fear factor B.S. that we ALWAYS see just before spring break every year. What a coincidence!! I went to the Penasco Palooza concert last Oct and it was fabulous!! I'm looking forward to another great concert on March 17th.

    Rocky Point safer than US
Turn on you TV or radio and listen to the violence anywhere in the United States on a daily basis. It is not here in Rocky Point. Living here full time I can tell you I feel much safer here than Phoenix etc.

    Way overblown
Over the last 20 years of my monthly visits, I guess I somehow missed the headless bodies stories, although, start with Chandler, AZ if you want some documented stories. As for the other incidents, you forgot to mention that those few things happened over the duration of YEARS -- again, way more peaceful than, say, Phoenix. Nowhere is as safe as it used to be.

    Thank you KTAR and Steve
Steve and I go as often as possible to relax and enjoy the beautiful people there; Mexicans, Americans and Europeans. They are barely holding on to their real estate and restaurants. They asked Steve to help them and he has been wonderful to bring people there. It doesn't hurt the government or drug gangs when we buy bad news generated from lobbyists and Las Vegas who want the business of Spring Break. It hurts these people and their town. ...Message continued

Maybe we should all start being more cautious about everything we hear and trust real truth.I work every day in high crime areas of Phoenix. Two years ago, a headless burning body was in the trash can in front of one of the churches nearby. I still went to work because the kids and teachers needed me. One little child watched his father shot in front of him. We still took care of the family. The concert in October was the best concert I have ever been. We will have a beautiful, fabulous time and hope you all join us.

    is Arizona safe
Maybe the State Dept should put out a travel warning for Arizona...Sounds pretty dangerous to be near ASU going to a nightclub in Tempe on a Friday night. Or what about poor little Christina Green going to see the congresswoman at a Tucson Safeway? That's how ridiculous it is to say "exercise caution when traveling to Rocky Point" You need to experience what a great place it is for yourself!

The bodies were not found in Penasco they were found in the desert off the highway over 50 miles away. The police chief of Penasco was not killed, he is alive and well. The gunbattle you referred to was between two cars of drug cartel members Not sure why you referred to a murder in which an AK47 was used. A murder is a murder by what ever means, and there were 7 in Rocky Point last year. No Americans! All these incidents made headlines in Penasco, Phoenix, and Tucson. The media in Phoenix and Tucson, like you, did not have their facts correct. DM

    Wake up
The headless bodies were found in 2010 & 2011: 5 girls out at the dunes just east of Playa Encanto and 4 males north of town mid/late last year. Killed execution style elsewhere, bound and dumped. These were local Rocky Point residents. As for years, all those events I listed are from 2009 to present. Nothing makes the news because the reporters who report are killed.
