PHOENIX - Gov. Jan Brewer's office says she has until Saturday to schedule a special election for 8th Congressional District voters to pick a midterm replacement for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Arizona law requires the governor to act within 72 hours to schedule a special election to fill a U.S. House vacancy.
Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says the 72 hours begin Wednesday at 5 p.m. He says that's because Giffords' resignation letter says it is effective at the end of the day.
Benson initially said the clock started with receipt of the letter.
Brewer's office has said the special primary election likely will be held in April, followed by a June special general election.
Giffords says she's resigning to concentrate on recovering from effects of the gunshot wound from a January 2011 shooting.
