PHOENIX - A Peoria man acquitted of murdering his infant son has been awarded $855,000 in civil damages in his lawsuit against two jail officers.

A Maricopa County civil jury last Friday found two county Sheriff's detention officers liable for malicious prosecution, abuse of process and civil rights violations and awarded the money to Delano Yates.

On the night he was booked into the downtown Phoenix jail in September 2003, Yates claimed he was beaten by the two detention officers.

Yates was acquitted of killing his 11-month-old son in 2006. He filed suit against the detention officers in September 2007.
