A 28-year-old mother of two small children was shot to death behind the wheel.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch said her name was Carla Sanchez and it happened just before 6:00 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2008 near 67th Avenue and Indian School Road.
“She was actually on her way to take her ex-boyfriend to work,” Burch said. “She had borrowed his car, they had a good relationship, and he needed to go to work, so she was going to his home to pick him up for work.”
Her ex-boyfriend was standing out front as she pulled-up to his house when someone in a black vehicle pulled up along side her and shot her to death with a blast from a shotgun. It happened right in front of her ex-boyfriend.
“Initially, investigators looked to see if the ex-boyfriend was the target,” Burch said. “She was in his car and in front of his home. But, at this juncture, they still don’t know who the actual target was.”
Our next case may have multiple suspects. It’s happening throughout the Valley at cemeteries. Burch said thieves are going in and stealing the bronze vases.
“These are the vases that have the flowers in them. Sometimes they’re engraved and have sentimental value,” he said.
The thieves are stealing them for the value of the bronze. While loved ones may pay big money for those vases, the thieves only get $5 or $10 each for them.
Burch said the next time you’re at a cemetery, pay attention to what’s going on around you. If something looks suspicious, call police.
