Lost 80s at 4: R.E.M. tops alternative charts
How does a song whose origins are from 60s bubblegum groups like The Archies, The Monkees and The Banana Splits end up at the top of the Alternative Charts?
As R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe describes it, the band was throwing all these cheesy 60s songs at him and he said, "I'll raise you and see you one. And I wrote the most inane lyrics that I could possibly write."
The song he wrote was "Stand" and on this date in 1989 it was the No. 1 alternative song in the US.
