HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Members of Connecticut's congressional delegation are attempting to secure federal funds to help Newtown build a new elementary school after last year's massacre- and they say senators owe the residents after failing to support legislation that would have expanded background checks for certain gun purchases.

U.S. Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, all Democrats, said Thursday they plan to offer legislation next week that would modify an existing grant that funds mental health counselors and overtime costs after tragedies such as the Dec. 14 shooting.

Murphy acknowledged it will be "a heavy lift" because the federal government does not fund school construction.

A Newtown task force recently decided to tear down Sandy Hook Elementary School and replace it with a new building.

    Anti-gun nuts such as
Bloomberg say mass shootings only happen in America. Calls for bans and stricter laws but concedes it wouldn't have stop the massacre given the guns were legally purchased.

    Well regulated militia
The second amendment is very clear that the right to bear "arms" is designed for militias, which were necessary 200+ years ago to keep the British from controlling the country from London. The word "arms" means any device that could cause harm to others, or the animals you need to eat. But, like ever everything, times have changed. Those who think in the modern world that folks need auto and semi-auto guns that are really only useful for killing people, are the epitome of evil.

The 2nd amendment was NOT entirely for a militia purpose. It was to protect people from government. Please refresh yourself with our founding fathers and constitution.

    Disarming
innocent people does not protect innocent people. Guns are not the problem but the solution. Israel had school shootings until teachers were permitted to be armed. All these shootings occur in Gun Free Zones. When did criminals start obeying laws? End GFZs. Allow teachers and others the tools to protect our children and others. Many examples of mass murderers using items other than guns have occurred.

No suggestion in any of my posts about
disarming the law abiding. Finding ways to keep the dangerously mentally ill from getting access to tot killing guns is the order of the day. For some reason even this modest and eminently reasonable social good curdles the blood of gun nuts and the NRA.

    Figures
One major party in this country wants to make it possible for anyone, without training, licensing, or tremendously rigorous background checks to get guns, including pistols and military grade hardware. Meanwhile, this same movement wants to make sure that access to proper health care - which would include mental health - continues to be financially oppressive. Go on, it's all about our imaginary freedoms. I suppose that some of those "patriots" whose blood waters the tree of liberty will also have to include kindergartners, who don't know a thing about politics.
