HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Members of Connecticut's congressional delegation are attempting to secure federal funds to help Newtown build a new elementary school after last year's massacre- and they say senators owe the residents after failing to support legislation that would have expanded background checks for certain gun purchases.

U.S. Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, all Democrats, said Thursday they plan to offer legislation next week that would modify an existing grant that funds mental health counselors and overtime costs after tragedies such as the Dec. 14 shooting.

Murphy acknowledged it will be "a heavy lift" because the federal government does not fund school construction.

A Newtown task force recently decided to tear down Sandy Hook Elementary School and replace it with a new building.

Keep the families of the victims in mind.
I can not imagine the devastation faced by the families of the victims and the survivors for that matter. What must happen to stop this? Do our schools need to become prisons? There is no way to predict these types of tragedies, but I do think the massive amount of media coverage does play into the minds of those horrible monsters that do these things.

It's amazing how much can be prevented just by being aware of your surroundings, and understanding that you don't live in a perfect world. You don't need to have armed patrols, but you do need to educate people on speaking up if something seems amiss. We are so worried about being PC or getting sued, no one wants to say that hey that guy looks suspicious, or he doesn't belong here. Many times we become victims due to our own ignorance. Trust but verify.

    Here is the real problem
The fabric of our society has all but crumbled. When are we going to start addressing our social issues instead of using guns as the scape goat? These things rarely, if ever, occurred 50 yrs ago. I am not sure when our social foundation began to deteriorate, but if I had to guess, it would be sometime around the birth of pop culture.

    Michoacan...really?
How we as Americans obtain firearms is really to easy. There does need to be a re-work of how to get a firearm. However, if your a criminal, youre not going down to the local gun shop to fill out a background check. You can purchase a firearm with out the selling party doing any background checks. So what is the solution with out getting into the rights of those that stand on the 2nd amendment?

When we take away all the guns, then they use knives, we take those away, then they use bats, take those away, then they use their hands, where does it stop? Don't we have to correct the problem at the source, the human who decides that they want to do harm to others?

    according to the FBI,
baseball bats are the #1 weapon used in violent crimes. There are more non-firearm homicides than firearm homicides a year. Actually more unintentional falls per year, more drug abuse deaths, more unintentional poisoning, more motor vehicle deaths, more alcohol related deaths, medical error deaths, tobacco use deaths. And there you have Micho going on a rant that is meaningless because Micho is clueless to actually facts and only drinks the anti-gun progressive left's juice. It's always predictable and funny what that Micho writes, rarely actually true.
    Equal Justice, Not Social Justice.

    Guns don't kill people,
people with guns kill people. People with baseball bats do to. But if you walk into a movie theater screening Batman Rises in Aurora, Colorado with a baseball intent on mass murder, my guess is you won't get as far as a guy with guns and lots of ammo. Also, OneWonders is way off the mark as usual about violent crime stats. His opinions can be safely discounted as being statistically flawed.

Your little rant about the NRA and gun owners was not only far left field but blatantly false as usual.

    Armed invasions happen to this
country everyday. The cartel cross the border everyday armed to protect their load. If you go hunting in Southern Arizona you better be using a semi-auto with a 30 round magazine just to give you a chance to defened yourself. Nothing lower than people who use a tragic event to push their agenda. For the record a concealed carry individual stopped the mall shooter in OR. He could not shoot because of other people in the area, once the gunmen saw another weapon pointed at him, he left and went in the stairwell and shot himself in the head.
