PHOENIX — Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson will soon have a little piece of him at home: an entire state highway.

The state of Arizona will honor the future National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee by renaming Highway 51 after him, the same number he bore while playing for the team. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will lead the signage reveal at Phoenix Children’s Hospital on July 17, alongside Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall and PCH President & CEO Bob Meyer.

The designation will come about a week before Johnson will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 26. Johnson was elected on Jan. 6 with 97.3 percent of the vote.

He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside former Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez, former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz and former Houston Astros outfielder Craig Biggio.

On Aug. 8, the Diamondbacks are expected to retire Johnson’s No. 51 uniform during a ceremony prior to the game against the Cincinnati Reds.

During his time with the Diamondbacks, Johnson won four NL Cy Young Awards as well as his only World Series championship.

We want to hear from you.
