PHOENIX — The first West Nile virus case of 2015 has been confirmed in Maricopa County, health officials said.
The unidentified man in his 50s displayed flu-like symptoms, but was not hospitalized.
“While this is our first confirmed case, there are likely many more out there and we expect our numbers to rise as the monsoon season continues,” Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine with the county said.
The symptoms of mosquito-spread West Nile virus are akin to the flu: fever, aches and muscles weakness. Severe cases can cause the brain to swell.
Last year, 93 cases of the virus were reported in Maricopa County.
