PHOENIX — Tick, tock: A countdown clock to the College Football National Championship was unveiled at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday.
“More than 100,000 passengers travel through this airport every day and they’re going to see this countdown clock,” Brad Wright, co-chair of the Arizona Organizing Committee, said at the unveiling. “Now they’ll be reminded about the biggest day in college football happening right here.”
The clock, displayed on a 55-inch screen, is inside Terminal Four.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said that, just like the recent Super Bowl, there will be plenty to do in downtown Phoenix the weekend of the big game.
“With the Playoff Fan Central, (there will be) three nights in downtown Phoenix where fans — locally from around the Valley and the state of Arizona — and fans traveling into Arizona for this incredible college football championship will have a fan-friendly experience that is second to none,” he said.
The mayor said that parts of downtown Phoenix will have to be cordoned off because of the event.
“We’re going to shut down streets,” he said. “You’re going to see a lot of big concerts and family friendly events, including at the Phoenix Convention Center.”
Stanton said star-studded events will be held Valleywide.
Stanton, a graduate of the University of Michigan, joked that even if the Wolverines’ arch-rival, Ohio State, makes it into the national championship, he promises to still be nice to all of the Buckeye fans who come to the Valley.
The game is set for Jan. 11 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
