A press conference was held Wednesday to announce efforts to change the name of the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway.
The stretch of the US 60 near Apache Junction could get a name change due to urging from Rep. Reginald Bolding, D-Phoenix (District 27), and community leaders.
“There are highways across the country that honor the president of the confederacy that we believe should not be a symbol of pride for this country,” Boulding said.
This comes the same week as national discussion heated up regarding of use of the confederate flag after leaders in South Carolina and Mississippi called for its removal.
The Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway is sponsored by the Arizona Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
The proposal for the name change will have to go through the Arizona State Board of Geographic and Historic Names. If passed, it will head to the State Transportation Board.
