Pima County Sheriff retiring after decades of service

TUCSON, Ariz. — Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik will retire at the end
of July.
Community leaders threw Dupnik a surprise party to celebrate his 57 years of
service in law enforcement on Friday.
Dupnik took the opportunity to announce that his last day will be July 31. He
had previously said he would retire but hadn’t announced a date yet.
Dupnik was first appointed sheriff in 1980 and has been continuously re-elected
since.
The sheriff’s department has over 1,500 employees and a $135 million budget,
according to its website. It helped investigate the 2011 Tucson shooting at a
political event that left six dead and 13 injured, including former U.S. Rep.
Gabby Giffords.
