PHOENIX — The city of Tempe has banned smoking in cars when a child is present.
City council members unanimously approved the ordinance at Thursday night’s meeting, according to a city release.
Neither drivers nor passengers can smoke cigarettes, pipes, cigars or e-cigarettes when anyone younger than 18 is in the vehicle.
Officers can only issue a citation if the car or truck has been pulled over for a different violation.
A first violation will cost $50; the fine jumps to $100 for ensuing violations.
The ban goes into effect late next month.
