A school in Scottsdale is Arizona’s only competitor in a national science competition.
BASIS Scottsdale high school is one of 68 schools competing in the national finals of the Department of Energy National Science Bowl championship May 3. The schools from around the country qualified for the championship by winning regional events.
Teams of four or five high school students face-off in a fast-paced question and answer quiz, with a focus on biology, Earth sciences, chemistry, astronomy, physics and math. Following the question and answer series will be double-elimination rounds.
The winning team will be crowned at the competition in Chevy Chase, Maryland May 4. The school in first place wins a 9-day all-expenses paid science trip to Alaska. The second place team wins a five-day tour of three national parks.
The Top 16 high schools will each receive $1000 for their schools’ science departments.
