PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns could soon see renovations to their home arena or a brand-new arena altogether, the Phoenix Business Journal reported.
One of the rumors floating around between real estate and downtown Phoenix circles is relocating the arena to where the South Building of the Phoenix Convention Center currently stands, on Jefferson and Third streets.
U.S. Airways Arena, home to the Suns, opened in 1992. This makes the arena the fifth-oldest in the league, once the Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings all get new homes.
The arena, currently being renamed Talking Stick Resort Arena, is owned by city of Phoenix and will house the Suns until their lease is up in 2029, according to spokeswoman Deb Ostreicher.
“We are in constant communication with the Suns on a variety of issues. They have been an excellent community partner for 25 years and we look forward to the next 25 years together,” Ostreicher said.
Suns Senior Vice President Maria Baier has acknowledged the rumors and confirmed they are just talk.
“There’s all kinds of rumors swirling around,” Baier said. “But we’ve had no serious conversation with the city about it yet.”
