PHOENIX — Dozens of protesters gathered at El Super in Phoenix Wednesday demanding higher wages from their employer.
Employees said the Hispanic supermarket chain is mistreating workers, paying many of them minimum wage and working to block union efforts.
Arizona workers were met by a group from California who walked off the job and are now traveling throughout the Southwest to various El Super locations to promote their cause.
“We are trying to catch up with minimum wage and the cost of living,” protester Flora Castaneda said. “We just want livable wages not poverty wages.”
Castaneda said she traveled with the group of employees from California to make a stand against her employer.
“(I want) to show the owner that we’re not playing and that we really want what is right for workers,” she said.
“I don’t see what’s wrong with trying to get better wages.”
