Arrest made in connection with shooting of Ferguson police officers

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, an arrest has been made in connection with the shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri.

The shooting, which occurred Thursday after a protest, wounded two officers.

At a press conference held at the St. Louis County police department Sunday, the suspect was revealed to be 20-year-old Jeffrey Williams.

Prosecutor Robert McCulloch said Williams acknowledged his involvement in the shooting. A gun recovered from Williams, a 40mm handgun, matched the bullet casings found at the crime scene.

McCulloch also said Williams told police he fired the shots at someone other than the police officers. Williams also was already on probation for receiving stolen property.

Williams is charged with two counts of first-degree assault and is being held on a $300,000 cash-only bond. McCulloch said the investigation remains open and that Williams may not have been alone. He is also being charged for firing a weapon from a vehicle.

The victims were a 41-year-old St. Louis County officer who was shot in his right shoulder. The bullet exited through his back. A 32-year-old Webster Groves officer, who was reportedly wearing a riot helmet with the face shield up, was shot in the cheek just below his right eye.

Police said the officers’ condition is improving.
