PHOENIX — Traffic will be impacted in the East Valley on Saturday as runners compete in the BMO Harris Bank Phoenix Marathon.
Kimberly Nelson of the city of Mesa said be prepared to avoid roads south of Loop 202 down to Main Street. She recommended using the US 60 or the 202 instead.
Closures will also affect McDowell Road, Val Vista Drive and Brown Road — all main parts of the marathon route. Roads will be closed as early as 4 a.m. Saturday.
Nelson said to also expect heavy traffic around the marathon finish line at the Mesa Riverview shopping area.
The city official had a tip on when to expect certain streets to reopen.
“The race is starting on the eastern side of the city,” Nelson said. “It’s logical that the eastern side of the city will open up sooner.”
All road closures should be lifted by early afternoon, she added.
Race participants can run a 10K, a half-marathon or the full 26.2 miles.
