PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area police department has teamed up with one of the state’s largest firearm shops to help an officer in need.

Last October, Avondale Officer Mike McGhee was injured in the line of duty after a robbery suspect slammed a truck into his patrol car.

McGhee has had a long road to recovery. Medical bills, as well as physical therapy costs, have been taking a toll on his family’s finances.

After hearing McGhee’s story, AZFirearms owner Dan Todd decided he wanted to help.

“The police department helps us and we wanted to support them because they are very well needed in our area,” he said. “So we’re doing a raffle. We’re giving away an AR-15 Head Down.”

Todd said his shop will be selling 1,000 raffle tickets for $10 each until Valentine’s Day. Tickets are available online and in-person.

“It is a way to raise some large money for them to help show our support and it just gets the community together,” he said.

About half of the proceeds will go to McGhee, who could be in rehab for up to a year. The rest of the funds will go to Avondale Police Association Charities and the 100 Club of Arizona, which helps first responders and their families during times of need.

We want to hear from you.
