K9 Gemma is new to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office force but is already sniffing out the bad guys.
A deputy stopped 42-year-old Nate Shaffer for a traffic violation Dec. 22 on Interstate 40 near Ashfork. Shaffer allowed his vehicle to be searched but withdrew consent when the deputy asked to see inside the trunk.
Dog Gemma and an assisting deputy then arrived for a sniff search of the vehicle. The K9 alerted them to the trunk, and the deputies discovered prepackaged marijuana bricks of marijuana weighing almost 90 pounds with a wholesale value of over $50,000.
Shaffer later admitted knowledge of the contraband in his trunk and confessed he had been hired to transport the marijuana from Northern California to Texas.
Shaffer was arrested and booked on charges including Possession of Marijuana for Sale and Transportation of Marijuana for Sale.
