PHOENIX — Nefissa Amda is a single woman who immigrated to Phoenix from Ethiopia in 1999. She has been living with her four kids in a two-bedroom apartment.
Lately, the family has been working with Habitat for Humanity to build a new home near 15th Avenue and Buckeye Road. When they arrived at the home Friday, they got a big surprise.
Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner and his wife were there.
The Warners’ First Things First foundation had filled the place with new furniture.
Amda’s eldest son, Abdurazak, said he couldn’t believe it.
“It’s quite the surprise and joy,” he said. “Obviously, you don’t expect it, so you’re quite surprised and amazed. We’re very thankful.”
Warner said he loves teaming with Habitat for Humanity for his “Homes for the Holidays” giveaways that help first-time homebuyers.
“I want to use my situation to help other people fulfill their dreams, like people helped us fulfill their dreams,” Warner said.
