PHOENIX — Incumbent U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick has retained her seat Wednesday, defeating GOP challenger Any Tobin in a tight race.
House Speaker Tobin called to concede midmorning.
With all 327 precincts reporting, Kirkpatrick captured 53 percent of the vote to Tobin’s 47 in the District 1 battle.
“I am deeply honored that the voters of Arizona’s First Congressional District have asked me to continue representing them. Now, let’s get back to work,” Kirkpatrick, a former state legislator, said in a statement.
Tobin said he felt he was the underdog, but thought the race would have been closer.
“It’s important that the process is respected and it’s important that when
elections are over that people move forward together and try to do things to
help,” he said.
Tobin won a Republican primary race that took nearly a week to decide. That race was called after Springerville rancher and businessman Gary Kiehne endorsed Tobin in Tuesday’s general election.
