Arizona is known as a haven for golf enthusiasts, and a recent list of the best courses in the U.S. is a testament to that notion.
Golf.com, the website for Golf Magazine, has released the “Top 100 Courses You Can Play 2014,” and Arizona boasts seven on the list.
Only public-access courses were considered, although no criteria were listed for how the best 100 places to play were ranked. Nonetheless, Arizona is well-represented on the list.
Just making the cut was The Boulders Club’s South course in Carefree. The We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell recorded two courses within the top 100 list, as did Scottsdale’s Troon North Golf Club.
The Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club — which recently began a $2 million renovation project — in the rural town of Maricopa also made the cut.
Even though Arizona counted several courses on the list, the highest any of them were ranked was 25th.
If you’re interested in playing at one (or all) of the country’s top 5 courses of 2014, they are as follows:
No. 5: The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort (Kiawah Island, S.C.)
No. 4: Bethpage State Park – Black Course (Farmingdale, N.Y.)
No. 3: Pinehurst Resort – No. 2 Course (Pinehurst, N.C.)
No. 2: Pebble Beach Golf Links (Pebble Beach, Calif.)
No. 1: Pacific Dunes (Bandon, Ore.)
