2 Arizona congressmen applaud moves at Phoenix VA

Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz.

PHOENIX -- Two Arizona congressmen are applauding news that top administrators at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care Center now are on administrative leave amid allegations of gross mismanagement and neglect at the facility.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said the officials include director Sharon Helman, associate Lance Robinson and an unidentified third employee.

Congressman Matt Salmon said Shinseki "made the right decision" and he's looking forward "to a swift and complete investigation" into the allegations.

Congressman David Schweikert said the move "is a step in the right direction."

The Phoenix Veterans Health Care Center has been under fire over allegations that up to 40 patients may have died because of delays in care. To hide delays in treatment, the hospital allegedly kept a secret list of patients waiting for appointments.
