Suburban Phoenix child shot when gun accidentally discharges
AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Authorities say an 11-year-old girl has been shot in a leg after her father accidentally discharged a gun he was cleaning in Avondale.
Avondale police say the child was transported to a hospital from an Avondale home Thursday afternoon with a non-life-threatening injury.
According to a police dispatcher, the child's father was cleaning the firearm in the garage when an ammunition round became jammed.
"When he went to try to clear it, it accidentally discharged," said Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Busse.
Authorities say the gun somehow went off, sending the round through two walls before it grazed the girl in the leg.
Sgt. Brandon Busse says police aren't releasing the names of the father and daughter.
Busse also says it's too soon to say if the father will face any charges.
