Arizona agency to conduct tests at highway sinkhole
PAGE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Department of Transportation is deploying equipment to help determine whether it can proceed with repairing a stretch of U.S. 89 where the pavement buckled.
ADOT said it will drill shafts that will be used to measure movement of the slope where the buckling tore up big sections of pavement on the highway south of Page.
According to ADOT, once the measurement work is done, the next step would be to design a potential repair project.
But ADOT said the first step is to determine whether the ground has stopped moving and is safe.
Traffic is being detoured around the closed stretch of U.S. 89.
ADOT spokesman Dustin Krugel said it's too early to predict when the highway will reopen.
