PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer is in Washington to attend a meeting of the National Governors Association and the winter meetings of the Republican governors' group.

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson said she traveled to the East Coast on Thursday and is scheduled to return on Tuesday.

Brewer and other governors are expected to attend an event at the White House Sunday evening and then meet with President Barack Obama on Monday.

The state Constitution designates the Secretary of State as being in charge when the governor is out of state.
