PAGE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety says U.S. 89 is closed in both directions south of Page because of a pavement problem.

A large sinkhole has split the road 150 feet long and about three to four feet deep.

The DPS says that's because of what it describes as a ``pavement buckle.''

The Department of Transportation's Garin Groff says traffic will have to be detoured for the time being.

"If you're heading northbound, you'll need to take U.S. 160 east 15 miles, then take Arizona 98 onto Page," Groff said.

Crews are assessing the damage and trying to determine if the storm is the cause.

There is no estimate for when the highway can re-open.

This adds 49 miles to trip.
The change adds 49 miles to your trip from Flagstaff to Page. This means going through Tuba City toward Kayenta on US-160 E/Navajo Trail for 50 miles (not 15). Then turning on AZ-98 north to Page (about 66 miles). Total 106 miles compared with 66 miles on US-89.
