COOLIDGE, Ariz. -- A Coolidge police officer has been treated at a hospital and released after being wounded by the ricochet of a bullet fired by another officer.

Authorities said the officer was wounded in the cheek Friday night when another officer shot at the tire of a vehicle involved in a chase and the bullet glanced off the wheel rim.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave pending a Pinal County Sheriff's Office investigation into circumstances of the shooting.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, the shooting occurred after an officer chased a speeding vehicle which stopped but then sped off at least twice during the pursuit.

Coolidge police did not immediately respond to requests for the two officers' identities.

The driver of the car was arrested.
