PHOENIX -- An Arizona State University student who got lost on a hike in mountains east of Phoenix was rescued within about 16 hours of being reported missing.

Tempe police say 21-year-old Michael Kmit of Minnesota was reported missing by his roommates after he failed to return from a hike Saturday in the Superstition Mountains.

Authorities eventually located Kmit's vehicle near a trailhead and used ground crews, dogs, horses and helicopters to find him.

Police say Kmit didn't take any food or water with him on the hike.

He suffered from dehydration.

    This is why it is important a phone works in remote areas. Also you never hike without a gps. Even when I hike local mountains I bring my gps. I dont use it but I have it just in case. duh. Plan for the worse and hope for the best. Piss Poor Planning Proceeds Piss Poor Performance (hike)
