PHOENIX -- School teachers who undergo special training would be allowed to have a gun in a locked area of a school including their classroom if a bill being pushed by a Republican lawmaker and Attorney General Tom Horne becomes law.

Rep. David Stevens of Sierra Vista says his bill is voluntary for school districts and allows then to designate any employee to receive weapons training and keep them in a classroom lockbox or other secured spot on campuses. That includes teachers, principals or even school maintenance staff.

Horne said Monday district employees would go through a free 24-hour training course run by his investigators.

The bill is the latest in a series of proposals to tighten school security after a gunman killed 20 Connecticut first-graders and six educators in December.

    Gun in locked area?
What good will that do? Rifle rack above the dry erase board and open carry in the classroom with no cover shirt. Gun training for the preschoolers in case the teacher goes down.

    about deter
Shooter like a "gun free zone" because he/she knows they will have total control, no one else will have a gun, they can do what every they want, they are in complete and total control. But when someone might have a gun than the shooter knows they wont have total control and will go to another location because they want the control and rush of it

    Ah, Micho.
Never any solutions - only demonizing those that actually propose some. It must be hard out there in the real worl for you. One thing is for certain - where "gun-free" school zones are maintained - is precisely where they will continue to occur.

    No one avenue solution.
Unfortunately there isn't one avenue of solutions to solve all of our gun violence issues. However I'd like to see resource officers on school grounds rather than arming as many teachers as possible, universal background checks, and fund the ATF properly just for starters.

    He's half right...
...but not having the firearm on ones person is a bad thing. Try asking a cold blooded killer to hold on a minute while you retrieve your firearm. Plus any firearm is much more secure on ones person than locked up where it would be much easier to steal. End gun free zones.

    Michoacan, still
waiting for a follow-up response on the original intent of the 2nd Amendment. Check it out.

Asked and answered. Understand you don't
like the response. Bummer. Speculating on original intent is great good fun. However, the 21st Century's conservative Supreme Court agrees with me that regulating gun owners, within bounds, is A-OK. Time to read the court case references I provided you with if you want get yourself up to date with today's interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

    Michoacan, you didn't
answer schit. Seems when pressed for explanations you babble gibberish, when further pressed we get "bummer" you didn't like my response or no reply at all. That's fine, you're good at avoidance, diversion and denial. Many say you are brain dead. I read where liberals brains are wired differently, not normally, running on emotions. You don't get it and never will. Although you're our village idiot and at times entertaining, that is gone, you have grown annoying.

@ AZ83, asking a Progressive to provide an
accurate understanding of the Constitution, let alone the 2nd amendment is a waste of time. They are more interested in destroying this Country from within. They have always despised the Constitution and have spent countless years trying to erode it.
