Judge grants publisher's motion in Tucson shooting

TUCSON -- A federal judge is allowing a Tucson newspaper's publisher to intervene in a case seeking the release of investigate materials in the 2011 mass shooting that wounded former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns granted a motion Friday from the Star Publishing Company, which publishes the Arizona Daily Star.

The company has sought the dissolution of a protective order keeping the Pima County sheriff from releasing the material.

Last November, Jared Lee Loughner was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences plus 140 years for the Jan. 8, 2011 shootings that killed six people and wounded 13 including Giffords at her meet-and-greet event outside a Tucson grocery store.

The protective order was to ensure Loughner's right to a fair trial.

Burns is giving objectors seven days to reply.
