PHOENIX -- Fred Duval, a former Arizona Board of Regents member with deep roots in Democratic Party politics, is now formally exploring a 2014 candidacy for governor.

DuVal on Thursday filed paperwork with the Secretary of State's Office to establish an exploratory committee.

DuVal served as a top aide and adviser to Bruce Babbitt both during Babbitt's terms as Arizona governor and his unsuccessful campaign for the 1988 Democratic nomination for president.

He served in the administration of President Bill Clinton and was appointed by then-Gov. Janet Napolitano to the regents.

DuVal has also served as a Democratic National Committee member for Arizona.
