PHOENIX -- Arizona members of Congress and the U.S. Senate have reintroduced legislation for a proposed 7,000-foot-deep copper mine near Superior.

U.S. Reps. Paul Gosar and Ann Kirkpatrick claim the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act could create more than 3,700 jobs.

U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake say the mine would generate more than $64 billion in economic activity and tax revenue and could supply as much as 20 percent of the nation's domestic copper demand.

Kirkpatrick's district includes the proposed mine site. She acknowledges longstanding opposition to the mine from tribes and environmental groups.

Under the bill, Resolution Copper Mining Co. would exchange more than 5,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land the company owns throughout Arizona for about 2,400 acres of federal land 70 miles east of Phoenix.

    The tribes
and tree huggers should be glad that by letting go of these 2400 acres they are saving more than twice as much "environmentally sensitive" land.

This is federally protected public land
So Kirkpatrick sides with the state republicans and Tea Party people instead of her own party? She should be ashamed! This bill would privatize a public recreation area for the profit of a foreign mining company. President Eisenhower protected Oak Flat against mining in 1955, and the only way to undo Ike's law is to propose this "exchange" which is a complete sham. The lands to be exchanged for Oak Flat are incomparable pieces of overgrazed lands scattered throughout the state. A short film about this issue titled "A Not-So-Simple Exchange" can be seen on youtube.
