PHOENIX -- A report examining hundreds of sex-crimes cases that were inadequately investigated or weren't looked into at all by an Arizona sheriff's office attributes the failures to understaffing and mismanagement.

The mismanagement in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's sex-crimes squad includes hundreds of pieces of evidence that weren't put into evidence storage and instead were left in offices or taken home by detectives.

The internal affairs investigation released Monday blamed officers for some failures and noted that the sex-crimes squad was ``overworked and understaffed,'' but on Monday rescinded letters threatening to discipline the officers in question.

Arpaio apologized for the bungled cases and has since said his office has moved to clear up the inadequately investigated cases and has taken steps to prevent the problem from happening again.

I think the story is about releasing a report regarding the bungled cases. Don't recall seeing anything about Segal here. Perhaps you could contain yourself and focus on the actual story.

ignoring the following: "The Sheriff's Office delayed for five years an investigation into an allegation against a convicted rapist. While the probe was on hold, another police agency received a report that the same suspect had allegedly assaulted a teenage girl. In another case, the agency ignored for a year one girl's allegation that her horse trainer had molested her. The suspect was accused of molesting three more girls before being indicted."

priorities: "Current and former employees say past staffing shortages were exacerbated by the agency's preoccupation with other priorities, such as illegal immigration, public corruption and animal-abuse crimes. When subordinates tried to call attention to staffing shortages and other issues, they were brushed aside by former Chief Deputy David Hendershott, according to a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office."

The Arpaio apologists are coming out...
...but no matter what they say, they can't dodge the fact that Arpaio is the ULTIMATE RESPONSIBLE for the malfeasance, incompetence, ineptitude, and corruption in the agency he "leads" (I put that in quotations). No excuses are valid. If Arpaio had any decency, he would take his ball and go home, resigning immediately. What a joke-of-a-law-enforcement-agency.

    And yet, the man keeps
getting re-elected. How does one who many describe as incompetent continue to get elected to the office? Must be a huge conspiracy within Maricopa County. Maybe Micho and the chemist can answer these questions without using any derogatory terms or condescending attitude to describe the voting population of Maricopa County, thereby giving more integrity to their answers. I doubt it, but you never know.
