TUCSON, Ariz. -- One man is dead after the small plane he was piloting crashed near Ryan Airfield in Tucson.

Pima County Sheriff's officials said they received multiple 911 calls at 9:30 a.m. Friday about a plane crash in a desert area some 10 miles southwest of Tucson.

Authorities said it appears the pilot was the only occupant of the single-engine plane.

The name, age and hometown of the man weren't immediately available.

Sheriff's officials said the cause of the crash was unclear.

Investigators have yet to determine where the plane took off or where the pilot was headed.
