TEMPE, Ariz. -- The familiar gold A hovering over Arizona State University's main campus was painted purple on Wednesday.
No, a rival team was not pulling a prank. The letter on Hayden Butte was painted in honor of 57-year-old ASU professor Sidney Bacon, who is fighting pancreatic cancer.
Bacon is a one-year survivor of the disease and is being treated at Scottsdale Healthcare's Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, which has recently developed a new treatment that improves survival rates.
Purple is the color of pancreatic cancer awareness ribbons.
