PHOENIX -- A bill will be introduced Tuesday at the State Capitol that seeks to shut down photo radar cameras.

Last year a legislative attempt to pull the plug on radar cameras failed by one vote.

Shawn Dow with Campaign for Liberty is driving the attempt to shut down the cameras and believes it will happen this year.

"These things increase accidents and all of them need to be taken down. That bright photo flash is causing accidents," he said.

Peoria and Tempe have already turned off the cameras. In 2011, Peoria police told city officials that collisions at four intersections with the cameras had increased by 29 percent.

"It's absolutely ridiculous. If you stood out on a corner with a camera and a bright flash, and flashed a driver you would go to jail," said Dow.

Cameras are still up and running in Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson. Dow believes only a law enforcement officer should be allowed to write tickets, not private companies such as camera operator Redflex.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety ceased its speed-camera program in 2010 and officials removed the devices from Valley freeways.

Then lets go all the way with this insanity
"Just because you're speeding doesn't make it dangerous," he said. "A camera can't determine whether going 56 in a 45 is safe." That's right they need to quit wasting money on speed limit signs too. Each driver can decide how fast is safe for them to drive.

I find a cop with his radar gun on the side
of the road dangerously distracting. Not to mention red light strobes. I agree with AZoldsettler. Let's drop enforcement of our traffic laws altogether and let each driver decide what's best. This is far more consistent with the individual freedoms upon which our country was built.

    It works...
I hate them too... but they work. When we had photo radar and red light cameras people actually obeyed the laws more. The red light cameras are a pain, but people actually stopped. They also stopped at other streets that didn't have them. That's how bad of drivers, or dumb, they are. Overall it made things better. It conditioned the really bad drivers (most of Phoenix area) to drive a little bit better. Speed cameras caused problems because of the same dumb drivers... going under the posted speed limit when they saw a camera, just like they do when they see a police car.

    Dangerous
A camera flash is bright at night and can be very distracting. Even if you are not the one getting flashed, it's still dangerous.

    Reality Check
They work period. For those who disagree, you are the ones who are speeding and texting and are the cause of accidents. Driving is a privledge not a right. Just like when school is in session, it is amazing how many people follow the rules till they are just past the 15 mph sign. The 15 mph law is from the first sign to the last sign. Maybe they should change the license rules back to every 10 years, so people are reminded of the rules of road.

    Really
We can't afford enough police, to really patrol the roads, we can afford to manage the roads with a system that does not lie and only penalizes the offenders. If you don't speed or run a red light you will not get a ticket. Really enjoy the 101 speedway since the took down the camera's run 75 in a 65 and get run over in any lane great improvement. If you break the law, pay the fine Smile you are on speed cam!

    Learn the law first
Acording to the instructor of a safety driving course I took a month ago, school zone starts at the first sign and ends at the croswalk or second sign, not the thierd or last sign. Reality Check should learn the law before making wrong statements! Photo Radar DOES NOT WORK. It a scam to generate revnue. The safetst highway in the world - the Autobahn - has no speed limit and cars travel in excess of 160 MPH! It is not the speed that is unsafe, it is the bad drivers that cause accidents
