PHOENIX -- The top House Democrat accused Republicans on Monday of refusing to further the discussion about community safety by ignoring his plans to control gun violence and boost school safety.

Rep. Chad Campbell, D-Phoenix, said he found it "troubling" that none of the nine bills making up his Arizona Safer Schools, Safer Community Plan has been scheduled for committee hearings.

Campbell's bills range from background checks for all gun purchases to increasing the number of school resource officers to boosting funding for mental health services. In all, his plan calls for $261 million to address gun violence.

"The longer we wait on doing anything, the more likely things are going to continue happening," Campbell said.

Rey Torres, spokesman for the House Republican leadership, said that if Campbell would spend more time working to get his legislation heard and less time personally attacking House Speaker Andy Tobin, R-Paulden, he might be more successful.

The call for action from Campbell and other House Democrats during the caucus' weekly briefing came less than a week after a shooting at a Phoenix office left two dead and drew national attention.

"Violence seems to be becoming more commonplace and we need to find ways to keep our kids and communities safe," said Rep. Eric Meyer, D-Paradise Valley, who represents the district where the shootings occurred.

Other provisions of Campbell's bills would double the number of school counselors in Arizona, provide $20 million to help schools address security needs, and allocate $138 million annually to expand Medicaid coverage for the mentally ill.

All but one of the bills have been assigned to committees, but as of Monday afternoon none had been scheduled for hearings.

"I'm not optimistic right now about them," Campbell said.

    Adding more "Dr. Phil"
will not make our schools safer in my opinion, especially for kids. If trouble kids will not even listen to their parent/s, why does this "feel good and love" democrats think they're going to listen to a stranger who they don't know in the first place? Instead of wasting money on more counselors, having more armed guards will give me more comfort for my kids at school.

Silly Chad. Why would the NRA mouthpieces,
aka conservative Republican committee chairs, want to hear anything that might cut into their campaign finance patron's bottom line? Public safety is not uppermost in their mind.

    Awwwww . . .
You mean they wont consider the latest DEM agenda to grow government, artificially increase employment, require more spending and taxes, to make us feel safe? Other government buildings have long been equipped with security personnel in response to new risks. A no-brainer. Instead, they are sensationalizng and spinning the issue hard and long. After all, it keeps attention away from the real issues of our dying nation.

    Some people don't know
how lucky they are to be able to sit on the part of their bodies that apparently do all the thinking for them while true patriots protect their freedoms to sit back and run their mouths. The NRA is one of a few organizations protecting the last and most important of our freedoms from the dirtbag politicians who just want to continue stealing and wasting our resources and make all of us completely dependent on them. Ask the 260 million dead at the hands of their governments in the 20th Century how well that worked out for them.

    Of that 261 Million...
He is not allowing any addional funds to hire more law enforcment officers to do all these things he wants to see happen. School Resource Officers do not spring from wells of good intentions. And who does he think is going to do all these extra background checks?

    Too many bad people!
Both good and bad people use effective means to accomplish thier designs. There is a shortage of protection for good people to feel they can freely protect themselves or go about unmolested by law enforcement. Bad people know this so as long they go unnoticed they fulfill thier intentions. Remove the negative demonization of weaponry and recognize the charactor of the individual and then you will be on the track to safety. Gov doesn't care about gun control, they seek people control, infringing on 2A is one of the most effective to do so.

    gun control wont work
we have drug control laws and look at how many kids/adults abuse/sell/steal prescription drugs, even banned drugs can be found at just about every school. Celebrities even take banned drugs, athletes do too. Drug control laws really work, lol. just because we have controlling laws doesnt make things better or safer.

What part of BROKE is not clear?
This overgrown, corrupt government has taken and squandered the money, so forget about big daddy government, with their ingenious plots to steal more money on the premise that it's "for our own good". WE THE PEOPLE have to be allowed to take responsibility for ourselves and our kids. Personally, if I were raising my son in the current system, I'd home school him. But at least let the teachers and staff who are willing and able exercise their rights to concealed carry and get rid of these moronic gun-free zones.
