PHOENIX -- Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would give Arizona high school seniors the option to recite a loyalty oath before they graduate.

Originally, House Bill 2467 would have made the oath a prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in the state. The Arizona Capitol Times reported the change Tuesday.

"To me it's not a Republican bill, it's not a Democrat bill, it's an American bill," said Rep. Steve Smith of Maricopa, one of the bill's sponsors. "People feel that our high school kids that will be adults should understand their role as an American citizen."

The oath, which would be pledged to the school principal, reads:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose or evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge these duties; so help me God."

If passed, HB 2467 would take effect starting in the 2013-14 school year.

    What a joke!
The Arizona Legislature has violated this oath, ethics and morals on too many levels, to be demanding anything from our kids. The have proven to be less than a role model. Examples, all legislators that took monies, tickets, trips, etc., freebies in general. Then there's Ben Arredondo, Russell Pierce, and the list goes on and on. Tell you what, Arizona legislator, please take the oath, live by it, be a role model, don't do anything that would get your name in the paper, and then we'll see.

Anyone catch the inherent hypocracy here?
"...that I take this obligation freely..." Well except for that whole "can't graduate without it" thing forcing you to do this. Minor detail though, right?

    Seriously?
More government intrusion by the far right. Will the 15% of the country who do not identify with believing in any "gods" be required to pledge this oath to god? Which god will need to be the recipient of this pledge? And, isn't one of the great things about freedom the ability to be free to not pledge yourself to something in which you don't believe? Someone needs to look up the word, "fascism."

My party is trying to pass this bill, AZ is standing out as to having the highest drop out rate in the country. I keep trying to understand where our priorities have gone. In the scheme of things this is a nice accessory to our platform but we have obviously gone off track.

    Morons in Charge
What the heck is wrong with Arizona...a state that insist on maintaining a moronic center stage and a constant embarrassment to the rest of OUR country, with it's paranoid and racist stands. An oath to the constitution...what a joke. If arizona is going to be ridiculous, at least be creative...it should of been an oath to arizona's narrow minded believes, not the constitution, which they selectively choose 2 ignore.
