TEMPE, Ariz. -- A body spotted by joggers in the Tempe Canal earlier this month finally has been identified.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the cause of death for Bennie B. Spencer, 59, is pending the results of toxicology tests.

Joggers called 911 on Jan. 3 after seeing the body in the canal.

The partially decomposed body was pulled out by Mesa firefighters.

Sheriff's officials said there's no sign of foul play.

They said Spencer was identified through fingerprints and criminal records.

    So sad
If there is even one thing we can do to reduce these canal deaths, if there’s even one life that can be saved, we’ve got an obligation to try.
