PHOENIX -- Republican state Sen. Rich Crandall and Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu want to take money from the state's Clean Elections process and use it to add more school resource officers.

Crandall and Babeu said they can add nearly 300 armed officers in schools, improve mental health assessment so threats are identified and expand school guidance counseling with $30 million.

The plan's money mostly goes for armed campus officers among the state's 2,200-plus schools. Taking the money from Clean Elections requires voter approval.

The Republicans' proposal is the latest designed to address school violence in the wake of December's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Attorney General Tom Horne wants to arm principals, and Democrats have a plan to increase school resource officers and add guidance counselors and mental health treatment.
