PHOENIX -- When teachers return to classroom after the long holiday break, they won't be armed but a state lawmaker expects a push in the upcoming legislative session to change that.

House Democratic leader Chad Campbell said arming teachers, principals or volunteer guards is a horrible idea, but he expects attempts from some Republicans. He said the solution is funding the school resource officer program which has been gutted since 2009.

"Basically by Gov. Brewer and the Tea Party for the past few years. We need to fund the school resource officer program," he said. "It puts trained law enforcement on the ground that knows how to do its job."

Campbell said funding also needs to be restored to threat assessment and emergency response planning in the schools so they have the tools they need.

"It is time for common sense," he said. "We don't need knee-jerk reactions and putting weapons in the hands of teachers is not the right thing to do. I have yet to talk with a teacher who wants that responsibility."

Having people on hand to respond
AFTER an incident is over is worthless. Might as well just buy chalk and save ourselves the time and effort it takes to look at what really works - like maybe getting rid of "gun-free zones" that attract the loonies and enable teachers and staff who are already willing, able and ready to train and carry concealed. It would only take one or two on campus costs nothing and the nutjobs will go elsewhere.

You can put laws on the books till
your blue in the face, but it will never stop someone from carrying out a violent act. CT school incident, Chicago, DC and NYC are perfect examples of that.

    Campbell lies again
He blames the Governor and Republicans for cutting the funding to keep cops in schools. Factually over the last few years the Obama administration and Congress quietly let federal funding for several key school security programs lapse in the name of budget savings.

    What?
Doing anything in th wake of the Sandy Cook shooting in knee jerk feel good reaction. Mass shootings are statistically rare you have a higher chance of being hit by lightning so until we fund lightning rods for the schools i say let the posse in. The Posse is volunteer and trained.

One armed person is not the
answer. Anyone planning something will take them out first. I’m outraged at those saying “more guns are not the answer”, yet the only guns, are in the hands of the killer, killing in the Gun Free Zones. No other guns, where are the, “more guns”? If there were, “more guns”, in the hands of, more good people, then we could fight evil on equal footing, challenge it, engage it, let it know it’s not welcome here any longer and will be stopped with extreme malice.

    Budget cutting lie
Obama and Congress cut two separate bills that funded school security. Those cuts came in 2011 and 2012.
