Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.)

PHOENIX -- Arizona Congressman David Schweikert said the nation avoided the fiscal cliff but is still heading for dangerous territory.

The United States House approved the Senate package that stops huge middle-class tax hikes and across the board spending cuts from taking effect.

Schweikert, a Republican, opposed the package because he said it will only add more debt load onto the nation.

"We had a president who kept demanding a balanced approach. His own deficit commission said for every dollar in revenue we should have three dollars in spending cuts," Schweikert said late Tuesday night.

"Guess what his balanced approach does? Spends more money. We're going to run another trillion-dollar deficit this year. Are the Democrats and the president going to tell the truth on what they're willing to do to reduce those crushing numbers?"

Arizona Republicans Jeff Flake, Trent Franks, Paul Gosar and Ben Quayle also voted no on the fiscal-cliff package. Arizona Democratic Congressmen Raul Grijalva, Ron Barber and Ed Pastor voted in support of the package.

I would like to see members of both parties start talking positively about resolving these issues. Instead we get the the same old rhetoric from both sides of the aisle that sees this as a competition and use fear tactics to puff themselves up. We had best stop listening to the talking heads and spend more time encouraging our political leaders to work together without bashing each other.

    NO NEW TAXES
That was the GOP line in the sand. Hard to talk about fiscal responsibility when YOU CANNOT RAISE TAXES...EVER. The GOP attempted to hold sourly needed tax breaks for the MAJORITY of America in hopes that they would not disappoint Norquist or the top 2%. This is NOT a long terms solution, it wasn't sold that way though. We have debt ceiling to talk about very soon. Right now we're still trying to resurrect the economy not pay down 60 years of mismanagement.

In your own home if your kids are starving and the current choice is feed the kids or pay the student loan you feed the kids. That is what this deal does. It feeds the kids so they don't starve while buying time for dad to find a new job. Priorities. Survival over credit rating. Recovery and stability over resolution of long term debt. Debt is an issue...just not the most important one RIGHT NOW.

An alternative, rather than the US-bread-line approach, would have been to repair the economy, creating jobs and wealth among citizens. We know how to do that. But people voted against it. They voted for the tax-and-spend, bread-line nation. So you are correct that we have a dire situation and that GOP is stubborn about contributing to it. They just dont surrender to the conqueror that quickly. But no worries. They will be overtaken, based on the signs of the times.

    Yes, Mich . . .
the mess did begin awhile back. We have had some poor leadership on both sides. The spending kept increasing and our nation came to a late realization that something must be done. Trouble is, the current regime not only does not care, they took that sky-high spending, added a rocket booster, and launched it into space light-years away, in a very short time. They are pretending to show concern, by raising taxes on the wealthy, which will pay for about 10 days of US spending. We are so gullible. There is a difference between poor leadership and a takeover

Our Government back from the career politicians who we supposedly sent to represent us. Nothing is going to happen as long as we put up with the same old crap that comes out of Washington!

The point of the negotiations was to reduce the deficit. All that was agreed to is raise more money. Without drastic cuts in government spending all we are doing is letting Washington spend more money. So when that discussion happens...now in March...that's when we will see who is really serious about reduding the deficit and who is playing the "shell game".
