Officers went door-to-door Thursday afternoon in the Maryvale area to warn residents about random gunfire.
The officers handed our flyers and described the dangers of firing a weapon randomly just a few days before New Year’s Eve, when some celebrate by firing a gun into the air.
In 1999, 14-year-old Shannon Smith was standing in her central Phoenix backyard, talking on the phone to her best friend, when random gunfire killed her.
After her death, Smith’s parents successfully pushed for a law making it a felony to randomly fire a gun.
